    Supported Look Inside Zip Files

it would be nice to be able to use thumbnails to look inside zip files at pics

    #2
Maybe someone could write a plugin for that.
    Its: Belongs to "It"
It's: Shortened form of "It is"
    ---------------------
    Lose: Fail to keep
    Loose: Not tight

    ---------------------
    Plurals do not require apostrophes

Plugin is necessary indeed. And quite a complicated one too. Because it would have several stages.
      1) IV should be able to look inside a zip, and make a list of the content.
      2) It should be able to retrieve each of the pictures out of the list to convert it to a thumbnail.
      3) If an overview of all the file inside the zip is needed, IV must convert all those thums into a proper format.

More like decompress files into temp folder and view them there - that is what other programs do. Then there is a waste disposal problem.

I don't use temp folders for this, but Total Commander.

How do you get IrfanView thumbs to use Total Commander. I tryed Total Commander and don,t like it ACDZIP is faster but getting long in the tooth. I also use
            ZipGenus but its slow.

To get thumbs in Total Commander: Check Configuration>Options>\Edit/View>Configure internal viewer. In the section 'Multimedia display' fill in the path to IrfanView. Restart Total Commander. In Total Commander you hit Ctrl+Shift+F1 to view thumbnails.
The most applied graphical format is jpg. You hardly get any benefit zipping jpg's. Sometimes they even grow bigger. Why not unzip these zipfiles first? Or did you zip your uncompressed images to zip? If so, why not convert them (using the batch-option of IrfanView) to jpg?

                comic book reader

the main reason for archive viewing for handling you comic book reader files, namely cbr/cbz (rar/zip).

it not something that's really needed, but it'd be nice if you didn't need to extract the files from your nicely organized album archives.

I downloaded and installed a comic book reader to enter into your reply. I like to keep things simple. The only thing I have to do in Total Commander is to give an enter on the zip file and on the first JPG in it. A dialogbox appears with a button 'Unpack all and execute'. And because IrfanView is associated with my JPG's, I can view them neatly one by one. I can understand the benefits of a zipped series of pages in a comicbook (you won't loose pages). So wexwimpy has a point with his remark:

                    CBR and CBZ format support

                    Hi

CBR is basically Comic Book Rar and CBZ Comic Book Zip

Comic Book Archive files consist of a series of image files archived in ZIP, RAR, or more rarely TAR file formats with the filename extension renamed to .cbz, .cbr and .cbt respectively. CBZ/R/T files typically contain PNG or JPEG files. Occasionally GIF, BMP, and TIFF are seen.

It would be really neat to have this option included in the next version.

This is not a LIFO ;-)

I would prefer to get an extension for the filesystem that let you open archives like folders in the file/folder selection box. Then there would be no need for special support. Just transparent.

In the moment ;-) it is easy to unrar/unzip/untar these archives to a folder. Because these archives are in most cases just containers for compressed images you will not loose a lot of space compared to the archives.

Or write a batch to uncompress the files in a temporary folder and view the folder in Irfanview from the batch.

Maybe Irfanview could evaluate .nfo files in folder (or these king of containers) to define the view order.

First, making specific format support while the only difference is a renamed extension from the standard ones, is quite useless.
So the suggestion should be : ZIP and RAR format support.

Midora is right, it would be quite nice if IV could open a compressed file, like the directory model of TC, and show the contents.

There is an open source solution called "CDisplayEx" available at http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=172158
But like CobraCmdr, wexwimpy and Sjef I would prefer to have such a feature integrated in IrfanView.

Open/View images in archives with IrfanView-Thumbnails

                              Dear Irfan Skiljan,
                              I propose this feature:
Wouldn't it be nice if "IrfanView Thumbnails" would be able to open archive files (like tar-balls, zip- or rar-files (TBC)) to view contained images and even make slideshows of pictures within archives?
The archive-name could be displayed like an directory name in the directory structure view on the left side. This feature should be optional.
                              Kind regards,
                              Q
