Can't See Photo Files in File Manager

    Hi Folks,

This is a real odd one.

Using Vista (I know) and IrfanView can see my image files fine.

Other applications and windows file manager can't.

File manager shows the folder as empty - but IrfanView can see them fine and open them.

Other applications also can't see them.

Told you it was an odd one.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,

    Dougie

Probably these files have the attribute 'hidden'.
And someone else should explain how to deal with that, because I don't use windows file manager.

Thanks for the reply, but I had checked the 'hidden' files.

Finally got to the bottom of things so I'll post as it may help others.

To keep legacy apps running, Vista lets them pretend to write to their familiar file locations often under their installation folder in \Program Files - INI files, data files, templates, or even music might wind up there.

But when you go to look for those files, you won?t find them! Vista actually stores the files in a ?Virtual Store? under the AppData store in your user folder. Fortunately, you don?t need to hunt around for the files, just turn on ?Compatibility Files? in Explorer. When you browse to a folder that has these hidden files, you?ll see a Compatibility Files toolbar button. Clicking it will show the virtual files for that folder. Keep in mind, though, that the files won?t show up in Open and Save dialogs.

So it looked as though files saved in one folder - but actually saved in another. So I've now pointed my application to the AppData folder and all is well, and any future 'saves' will go straight there.

      What a palaver from MS.
      Cheers,

As usual, Microsoft has found new ways to keep the poor user in the dark and without a true map. Thank you, Doug, for exposing the illusion.
