small graphics tools with large usefulness

I just downloaded and tried out Picpick - http://picpick.wiziple.net/

This tiny giant (under a megabyte, getting to be cause for amazement in the DotNet Vistafied bloatworld) not only takes over screen capture where IrfanView leaves off, it has a whole shipload of other features and it's portable. So far the only drawback I can see is its built-in noise. One has to mute sound in order to avoid a loud shutter-click. Some people even like that, so what the heck. It sits in the tray, offering a menu or hot-key operation. Ruler, protractor, color picker, shows cursor in shots...it even draws on the screen. I am totally gob-smacked.

Another screen capture prize is CropperCapture. It has a great precision area capture. You can create your own custom selection sizes, and adjust them before shooting. Pretty nice if you just need to select areas a lot.

Nice category. So here's some more tools.

Editor to make seamless tiles and 3d stereograms : XFader 5.00 - 706 KB

App to handle bitmaps of MRI-scans : eFilmLt - 3.4 MB

Scrambles all, or a selection of a bitmap (BMP or JPG) : Gmask v 1.70 - 366 KB

Ah. That Gmask does some of the things that some of us would like to do in IrfanView, like rotate/flip a selection or invert color in it.

Good you mention that. I forgot about this aspect. So even without the scrambling it can be useful.

This PicPick is pretty cool! It sure is a great alternative to FastStone Capture if you don't want to pay $20 for the latest version.

Quite powerful indeed. I will give it a try.

And talking about tiny tools with specific functions, check those made by Peter Balch :

                More nice tools here :

Our software was real freeware, free of malicious code including but not limited to) viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, etc. when downloading or installing casino software and other applications. Very nice tip Matera! Here's my comment on PicPick:
                  • I miss a kind of layering when editing a screendump with the tools. In FastStone Capture you can move objects and text. I love that. This kind of layering is in PicPick used for just moving/resizing an imported image. Importing an image into a screendump can save lots of time!
                  • FastStone Capture provides even Scolling Captures from an entire web page. A strong benefit.
                  • Can't see the difference between PicPick's normal Tools and the Whiteboard and haven't figure out what the Whiteboard is for.

The fact that you can work in Pixel-Edit-Mode is not an important issue because we have IrfanPaint. The possibility of importing images (and reduce/enlarge although not constrained and undo/redo isn't working here) is for me a motive though to use this tool in future (next to the portable FastStone Capture). And the handy Tabs!

Can't discover an ‘Including mouse’ option in both PicPick and Cropper. The latter is a little slow in starting up. Cropper works also portable.

The Whiteboard is for scribbling directly on the screen. You can then capture the result. A little different from notating a capture afterwards. Also good for demonstrating. There are other ways to do this, but not with the caprure built in.

I'm sure Faststone is absolutely wonderful, but I have to live without it. I use freeware webpage capture utilities.

FastStone Capture version 5.3 is freeware. Only versions after that are shareware.

I'd still rather go with something else -- something that gets updated now and then.

Fair enough. FastStone 5.3 still is rather competitive even with other updated products, but certainly lacks some things.
