You can practically do this already, although the preview window is not actually docked. Here's how:
    • In Irfan View main window:
    • Set, View, Display, Fit to Window.
    • Open the Thumbnail View, Maximize or make as big as you want it
    • Open a thumbnail in IV by double-click
    • Position the IV window where you want it over the bottom of the directory tree.
    • In IV, press Alter Shift, T, M, C, S to turn off the Toolbar, Menu, Windows Title bar Caption, and Status Line.
    • Adjust the size of the Preview window to fit
    • Double-click on thumbnails to preview them in IV

now, is there anyway to have the image appear with just a single click?

Not such a bad idea, save mouse mileage
          Its: Belongs to "It"
It's: Shortened form of "It is"
          ---------------------
          Lose: Fail to keep
          Loose: Not tight

          ---------------------
          Plurals do not require apostrophes

            Yes. Use FastStone Image Viewer.
