    How to soften the edges

I would like to "soften the edges" of photos, making them oval-shaped with blurred or feathered edges.

Can you tell me how to do this?

I am using version 3.99 with Vista and just installed the whole plug-in package but do not see that it includes actual filters.

    Thank you.

    Hi V. Sean River,

To my knowledge, IrfanView can't do that. You should use an image manipulation program.

IV indeed is an editor, not a painter.
An option to include image manipulation in IV is the use of .8bf plugins.
Although my Spotlight plugin has a circular shape instead of oval, maybe it's useful in this case.

There are some Adobe 8bf filters that offer some kinds of soft-framing. You have to collect them and fool around to find out how much you can get away with.

I used one called "Daydream" just today to make a blur-edged oval. It took some sneaky trickery, including inverting color before applying the filter and re-inverting after, but the effect was quite satisfactory. All I wanted was a background "watermark" image for a webpage.

Hmm, so that's where all my time goes...
        Its: Belongs to "It"
It's: Shortened form of "It is"
        ---------------------
        Lose: Fail to keep
        Loose: Not tight
