    Requested cpt-Support

    Hi everybody,

since a few years I miss support for viewing cpt-Files (Corel Photopaint, Version greater 6.0).
Do the owners of Corel have a patent on this format? Or does anybody know about the structure of this format, so I can try it by myself?
BTW I think Irfan made a great job with his viewer

    cptview

P.S.: I searched the internet to the end for a converter but all links are only some kind of customer fishing or are about programs with support for .cpt-Files <= Version 6 which are tif-files...

I have Corel PhotoPaint 9, and do still use it very occasionally. I also have Serif PhotoPlus 11, which is my program of choice if I have to do moe than simple editing of a bitmap file. Since these programs all have export options to create any kind of bitmap format that Irfan View can support, I think it is a waste of effort to add support for these file types to Irfan View.

It has limited support for PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro files, but merges all layers into one. These programs are so widely used that there may be some point in supporting these file type for the benefit of users who don't have the programs installed. However, Corel PhotoPaint is not in the same league, and nor is PhotoPlus. I have no idea of the stats, but I suspect less than 5% of users regularly use either of these two programs put together.

It would make much better sense to focus efforts on improving PNG Alpha transparency support, or CYMK support in Irfan View, before even considering adding support for any more rarely used file types when there is already a simple route to get those files into Irfan View — export as PNG or TIF.

I also use Corel PhotoPaint but in general I agree with Bhikkhu on this.
I use it as an External editor to do things that IrfanView cannot do, but if I open a tif or jpg or something similar that I have been using in IV then, after editing it, I save again in the same format. Only if I create items in PhotoPaint like layers or masks and want to keep them for future use, do I save as a cpt. In that case there is no point in opening it in IV because I can't use the layers or masks there.
It would be nice though if IrfanView could display a thumbnail of a Photopaint cpt file in the same way that it does a CorelDraw cdr.

This is often an issue with requests about what IV should be able to handle too in the future. The area where one can ask :
Is it the duty of IV to take care of it, or should other apps be responsible to produce a compatible format ?

I work with PSP and if I want to save a version with the layers still intact, I save it as .psp. So I know that I have to open it with PSP again, if the work goes on. I don't expect IV to do so, I consider it an extra, that I can see some content for recognition.

I agree too with Bhikkhu. Better concentrate on improving native technical capabilities of IrfanView.
About 'rarely used file types' : Maybe the whole package of present plugins should be reconsidered. If they should be present anyway (like some that are dependend of 3rd party apps) or are not worth the effort for further development.

Are we talking about Irfanview? I'm wondering a little bit...

It's nice that you guys are using programs like Corel and Photoshop, but there are a lot of people outside who don't. Irfanview allows you to show a lot of images w/o that you have to buy a special program or to ask someone to convert it for you.

So do you think this is no longer the goal?
Irfanview should concentrate to do things for specialists? Things a normal user has no idea about?

I would prefer to be able to see Corel files w/o conversion. And I'm sure Irfan would support this if someone would write a plugin. But this is not so easy as some people may think, as long as there is no specification of the file format. It may be easy to structure a file in segments and get out information, but immediately when the file format uses proprietary packing algorithms it starts to be hard to figure out how they are working.
