Taking Irfanview out with you and using the Irfanview bucket script file Everything you need is included in the accompanying zip file (Irfanview.zip). A zip file has been used because some of the file types you need cannot be sent on the forum on their own. If you have a modern version of Windows it will already include what you need to open the zip file and extract the contents. If you have an older version you may need to download a program to handle zip files. If so be aware that a number of free programs offered on the Internet may also download and install replacement toolbars and other unwanted items, unless you read every screen extremely carefully to spot them. I suggest that you get the 7-zip installer from https://ninite.com/ and let it do the installation for you. It automatically refuses everything that is unnecessary. Copy Irfanview.zip to the USB stick where you want to use it. Right click on Irfanview.zip. In Windows 7 or similar select "Extract all.." from the pop-up menu and then click the "Extract" button on the dialog. Close the new window that appears when extraction is complete. With 7-zip or similar select "7-Zip.." from the right-click pop-up menu, "Extract files.." from the next menu, and click the "OK" button in the dialog. You should now find in the folder where you put "Irfanview.zip" a new folder named "Irfanview" which contains 4 files. You can now delete the Irfanview.zip file. The current version of Irfanview at the time of writing was 4.38 and that is what is included here. It is just the basic program i_view32.exe and does not include any plugins. With it you will only be able to display the more common image file types and you cannot apply many image effects or examine metadata like Exif. It is quite sufficient for many purposes though. Try what you have here and then decide whether you want more. If you do, you can quite easily add it, especially if you already have a full Irfanview version installed on the hard drive of your computer. You can create a new folder named plugins in the Irfanview folder on the stick and just copy across any plugin files that you need from what is in that folder on the hard drive. No installation is necessary. If you have a later version of i_view32.exe on your hard drive then you should first copy that to replace the one on the USB stick so as to match the version of the plugins you copy. The other files from the zip are the script file "Irfanview bucket.vbs", a version of the settings file i_view32.ini to get started with, and a special version of the Irfanview icon "i_view32.ico" to allow you to distinguish the script file shortcut from a normal Irfanview shortcut on the desktop when testing the USB stick on your own computer. You can now plug the USB stick into another Windows computer and use Irfanview to display images on that. After plugging in you need to find the script file in the Irfanview folder and double click on it. An empty Irfanview window will open on the Desktop which you can use to change any options or settings you do not like. You will also see on the desktop the Irfanview bucket shortcut icon. You may want to drag that to a position where it is not going to be hidden under the window. Now you are ready to use it. Instead of double clicking on image files you will be using drag and drop. You could just drop files or folders into the open Irfanview window but you will find that you can do a whole lot more by dropping them onto the Irfanview bucket icon. The images you drop there can be from the host computer, your USB stick, some other stick or SD card, anywhere in fact that the computer has access to. You can drop image files, folders or lists onto the Bucket icon, any number in any combination and Irfanview will open them for you just as if they were all in one folder. It is as easy as dropping things in a bucket, that is why I gave it that name. Go on dropping more into the bucket and they will be added to the show too. You do not need whole folders if you do not need all of the files that are in them. Just open the folder in Windows Explorer, select those files that you do want by left clicking on them along with the Shift and Control keys. Then click and hold down on the files in the selection, drag it to the Bucket icon and drop it in.
