    Opening Size

Is there any way to control the opening size of files? Most of my images are very large and opening them they popup larger than my screen. Zooming out on every single one has become far too time-consuming.

"Fit to Screen" does not seem to be doing anything. None of the "Fit to..." are working.

I would like them to open to, say, 25% of their actual size.

The options in Settings are for Fullscreen mode. What you want is Display Options from the View menu. IrfanView remembers whatever option you last used. Fit to Window. Fit images to desktop works for me. Shortcut "f" toggles between 1:1 and Fit to Desktop (width or height, whichever fits best).

With a 1200x1600 pixel test image, on my Landscape monitor, Fit to Desktop zooms to 59%; while on by 1200x1600 Portrait monitor, it zooms to 92% (to fit the toolbars). This makes optimal use of all available space for large images.

Please post support questions in the IrfanView support forum.

Have you tried "View/Display options (window mode)/Fit only big images to window" ?

Yes, the image just fills the screen and I have to scroll to see the rest of it (both horizontally and vertically). Not that it matters, but I am on a 5k screen, so I wouldn't think this would be asking much.

I could be mistaken, but I don't recall this being a problem in the past. I am a photographer and most of my images are high res (like 5000x7000+).

Unfortunately, this is looking like a deal breaker as I have to spend several seconds on every single picture. I cannot open a folder then click through them with IV, it just resizes back to larger than the screen on the next image (it does not remember the zoomed out size I had for the previous image).

I don't follow. When I open an image and reduce the size to 20%, click the next arrow, it shows the images larger than the screen again. I need to be able to view all of them at 20%, otherwise, it's extremely cumbersome and time consuming.

Who said anything about reducing the image zoom to 20%. Just set the viewing display option to Fit to Desktop. The zoom will adjust automatically to the dimension of the image (in pixels) and/or the dimensions of the desktop.

That's what I need - the images to open at a reduced size. Further, setting that to "Fit to Desktop" does not work. It still opens larger than my monitor (which is a 42" screen, so that's saying a lot).

Example attached. It does this for every image. Click image for larger version

Your screenshot shows the options dialog for fullscreen display of images.

It's set to "Fit to screen"

It doesn't matter which one of those I select, it still opens images much larger than my screen. I see no option for "Fit to Desktop".
