For programming and compiling your own custom filter, there are some tools to do this :

      1) Filtermeister. It's limited shareware, but the site also offers some free plugins, and good information.
      http://www.filtermeister.com/

      2) Filter Formula. Recently has declared freeware, because development stopped. A form still is needed to get the license key.
      http://graphics.ats-vienna.com/

Both plugin-makers are 8bf plugins themselves, not executables.
The base of each 8bf plugin is a simple small ascii-file with a script, with the extension "afs".
An example can be found here
This can be read by Filter Formula to make the layout and compile the 8bf filter.
Filtermeister can read such a afs-file and convert it to its own format : "ffp", and then compile it to a filter-plugin.

      3) There is also a program called Plugin Commander, with its own format "ffl", but I used this way back in the past, so I hold back to tell info, to avoid talking nonsense.

              Hello on board

you may want to have a look to a list of Adobe Photoshop plugins, filters, effekts and more, which I made up some days before. Most of the links are written in English, only my website is written in German. My list also contains links to great link sites of other authors. I think it's a profound offer of lots of wonderful 'Adobe 8BF Filter' Plugins, which can be used with IrfanView.

There are filters which first need to be converted to an 8BF format, what easily can be done with Harry's free Plugin Commander 1.60.

              Take a visit and enjoy.

              Regards
              Shadowdance

                Hi Shadowdance,
                A very nice page.

I checked Plugin Commander again, and one can say it's free, but in real, it's a light version with a lot of restrictions, and one has to register with a mail-address to get access.

                Additional data:
In the meantime it appears that this .ffl format contains a list (gallery) of plugins, which can be compiled into single 8bf files with PiCo.
An example can be found here, complete with instructions. (The URL in the readme is not valid anymore btw)

A file by by ATS/Graphic with Filter source examples with comments about the syntax of the script.

Is it possible to use effects on selected areas only?

No, not the 8BF filter effects. Only the basic IV effects can be used in a selection - color adjustments and the Effects Browser stuff.
                      Its: Belongs to "It"
It's: Shortened form of "It is"
                      ---------------------
                      Lose: Fail to keep
                      Loose: Not tight

                      ---------------------
                      Plurals do not require apostrophes

Not very recent, but some nice filters at PunkinHaid's pages
More graphic stuff there, like tutorials, PSP tubes and fonts.

I attempted to run Topaz-Adjust demo but it will not open....On the Topaz site it does indicate it supports IrFanView......any ideas...

                            Hi Willgoss
My reading of the Topaz website is
"What programs are Topaz Adjust compatible with?
Topaz Adjust does NOT work with:
Fireworks, ImageN , The GIMP, IrfanView
                            Topaz Adjust is compatible with
Photoshop CS and above, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro

                            Hope that helps, Al

Well, Irfanview is now compatible with Topaz Adjust..this is a great plugin for simple processing as the many enhancements....currently the new version 2.4 is on sale (through September) for $39 which also includes their new noise filter coming this month.

I recommend this....along with Filters Unlimited I use both on a lot of my pictures....
