Solved HEIC - Unable to decode input file.

I have a problem previewing and opening .HEIC images. I'm running windows 8 sp1 w/ Irfanview64 version 4.59 with plug-ins installed. .jpgs preview and open fine.
.HEICs neither preview in thumbnails nor open, yielding the error:

    path\filename.heic : decode error!
    Can't decode input file.

I have checked in properties/settings under extensions, and tried both:
¤ load only associated filetypes while moving through folder
    ¤ load custom file types
after checking that "load default extensions" included .HEIC (it does), and that the file type association changed it in the registry (it did - opening the file from explorer results in Irfanview launching and producing the error listed above.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Next up: uninstall - reboot - reinstall - reboot - wish me luck!

Update: uninstall / reboot / reinstall / reboot (confirming associations as above) did not fix it.
I also confirmed the filetype association for irfanview to open .HEIC in the windows 8 file type default associations menu, but I don't think that was the problem.

Has anyone else solved this? I am completely unable to open or view .HEICs with irfanview.

IrfanView uses Windows Imaging Component for loading HEIC images. You have to install HEIC extensions for Windows to enable HEIC support. HEIC is based on proprietary HEVC video codec.
Compatible extensions are available in Microsoft Store:
    My system: IrfanView 4.59 64bit, Windows 10 21H2, Intel Core i5-3570, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX550 2GB

Thank you so much for your reply. While the links you provided only seem to have extentions for Win10 (I'm using Win8) -- using the info you provided I was able to find a work-around in copytrans, which offers a win7/win8 viewer. With that installed, irfanview also works for HEICs on Win8.

Thanks so much for the reply! This fixed my issue.
