Cannot save new image with pasted selection

I open a .jpg, select and copy all of it, open another image and create a selection box and then paste the copied image into the new selection box. Image shows correctly. However, when I save or save as the result only yields the second image without the copied and inserted sekection. Using windows 11 and latest version of irfanview 64 and tried it with irfanview 32. Have used program for many years and this is first time this has occurred. Tried uninstall and re-install.
