    Can't find the editor function?

Hi....I had Irfan before but then my computer blew up....when I got my new one up and running I downloaded the 64 bit version since I upgraded.
I can open pictures fine but there used to be a full editing function where I could crop and straighten images and then add brightness/contrast and then even play with different tones and effects through a series of tabs on the editing page.
That seems to have vanished or at least I can't find how to access it anymore. Did I miss something?

You must install the plugins. You can find them in the same place as the program download.

Be sure to use the website version (not MS app) https://www.irfanview.com/

thanks. I have done that but don't seem to get the editor function and other functions to come up. All 64 bit plug ins are downloaded and installed in their folder?

okay reposting because I figured out half of it. When I edit a NEF file I get access to the editor which is very much like Picasa and works really well for fast cropping and colour balance ect.
But I can't get it to go to that editor for a JPEG file. What is up that that?

Sounds very strange. I can press F12 and get the editor in any image file including PDFs. Is it available in the menu "Edit/Show Paint Dialog"?

Is PAINT.DLL shown in "Help/Installed plugins" and is it checked?

LOL. That's the point. I don't want PAINT. I want the quick edit interface with crop>enhance>colour'light/vignette that I get when I use it for NEFs. Why can't that interface work for Jpegs?

PAINT BTW is crap. I end up using photoshop which is a longer process and doesn't always give me what I need quickly. Maybe I should post a screen shot?

There is no difference between loading a RAW *.NEF image and a JPG image. They are both loaded in IrfanView as 24-bit bitmap images.

If you are seeing a different interface when loading a NEF image, maybe you loaded it in another program by double-clicking from Windows Explorer?

The Paint.dll plugin is a basic pixel editor, which can be used to draw on an image, or clean up artefacts. If you need the sophistication of Photoshop then use that.

IrfanView has several other dialogs for editing images: Effects, Colour Adjustments, Fine Rotation, Add shadows, etc. The same options are available for all images that can be loaded in IrfanView.

Maybe a screenshot of the editor interface that you're using for NEF files would help us to understand your problem.

Thanks. You're right. There should be no difference for JPEGs or NEFs!! But there. As you describe, the NEFs pull up a much more sophisticated editor which is very practical and easy to use and works quickly With PS I have to mess around through three or four different pull downs.
This is why I like Irfan!! I used it for some NEF files and was really impressed. I went back to edit some JPEGS.....can't pull up that function. Only offers me the paint which as you note is inadequate.
The images loaded came from the same folder. I pulled in two images from two cameras, one set to NEF and the other set to Jpeg capture. They went into the same folder.
This has happened many times. I can't get to the same editors I use as NEF.
It's exactly as you describe. Effects, Colour Adjustments, Fine Rotation, Add shadows, vignette etc.

As I suspected, you have opened the file in another application. That is not IrfanView's icon on the Windows Taskbar. What program is it?

In the first one the left screen is irfan in NEF mode. The right screen is the folder. in the second the left screen is the JPG in Irfan.

I know that the second monitor is showing the NEF files in Windows Explorer, but as the Task Bar icon shows, the Left monitor shows the image opened in another program, not IrfanView. You have opened it in another program (presumably by double-click, or right-click, open, in Windows Explorer. NEF files are apparently associated with that other application on your system.

If you view your files as a list instead of large icons you will see the program icon of the application that is associated with NEF files. If you enable file extensions in Windows Explorer, you can see the *.nef file extensions to distinguish them from *.jpg files.
