    Default FontCreator 9.0 Was Released

The Font Editor that I use to create my Free OpenType fonts just got a major update.

    My Review Page.

Earlier versions did not support OpenType feature at all, so I had to add them using the OpenType Compiler. Then version 7.01 added support for OpenType Glyph substitutions with an integrated code editor.

The latest version integrates both GSUB (glyph substitutions) and GPOS (glyph positioning) in a single dialogue, which allows users to design the features visually. All features are now supported, so one can design complex script fonts like Arabic, Hebrew, or Asian fonts too with features like mark to base, mark to mark positioning, and cursive attachments.

Adding OpenType features to an existing font is as easy as I can imagine. Opening the Code Editor from the Visual OpenType Designer will create a default script, which can then be modified in the visual designer by anyone with just a basic knowledge of OpenType Features. There is no need to learn the correct syntax or to write a single line of code, but those who prefer to work that way can do so.

Experienced font designers who are familiar with VOLT (Microsoft free utility for adding OpenType features) can import their fonts and have the VOLT projects converted to the easily understood script language used by FontCreator.
