Unhappy Irfanview says all images in (only) one folder are corrupt or ?

I'm a 38 year Windows user and average Mac OS 10.11 user. I've used Irfanview for over twenty years.
Bizarre stuff today: Using Mac with Windows 10 running in Parallels Desktop (so I can use Irfanview, mostly)

On an external SSD drive I have many folders. In one folder today when I tried to open any jpeg in that folder I get the same error. Can't read file header, or corrupt file...etc.

What makes it bizarre to me is:
I can open any file in that folder with a Mac imaging app no problems.
I can open any file in that folder with a Windows 10 imaging app (Paintshop Pro) no problems.
I can open jpegs in other folders with Irfanview.

I've restarted Irfanview, rebooted Windows 10, rebooted the whole Mac. No change.

I don't even know how this is possible? Next move is to delete then reinstall Irfanview,

What version of IV does you use?
Have you tried to use the portable version of IV and see if the same happens?

How are you open the files? From file explorer, or from Open file dialog in IV? Does it make any difference?
If it hurts not to drint, don't waste the bottle then.

... or does the folder name or path contain special characters?
