I'm a 38 year Windows user and average Mac OS 10.11 user. I've used Irfanview for over twenty years.
Bizarre stuff today: Using Mac with Windows 10 running in Parallels Desktop (so I can use Irfanview, mostly)
On an external SSD drive I have many folders. In one folder today when I tried to open any jpeg in that folder I get the same error. Can't read file header, or corrupt file...etc.
What makes it bizarre to me is:
I can open any file in that folder with a Mac imaging app no problems.
I can open any file in that folder with a Windows 10 imaging app (Paintshop Pro) no problems.
I can open jpegs in other folders with Irfanview.
I've restarted Irfanview, rebooted Windows 10, rebooted the whole Mac. No change.
I don't even know how this is possible? Next move is to delete then reinstall Irfanview,
