    Implemented Marker/black-out effects

    I regularly use Irfanview to make screenshots to send to people.
    Often I need to either point out part of the screenshot or make something like my private details invisible.
    Irfanview has a number of effects in the image>effects menu that kinda work for this, but not quite perfect.

    Pixelize and explosion work reasonably well for redacting info (though neither will stop a sufficiently dedicated hacker), but for marking there's only Sepia, which isn't very clear.

    I'd like to request a few additional effects:
    1. Mark (darken to a bright color (yellow?) or otherwise look like a neon marker pen)
    2. Black-out (typical black rectangle used for redacting info)
    3. Border (as it says; just draw a bright colored (red?) border along the selection of a few pixels (fraction of resolution?) width)

    These seem like the bare minimals that would fit into the Irfanview "philosophy".
    I'm sure there are already tools out there for people who want something more fancy that Irfanview needs not duplicate.

    Hi Martijn,

    these can be achieved through the Paint plug-in ("Edit" -> "Show Paint dialog" or F12).

    Black out and red frame are easy with the rectangle tool with/without the fill-box ticked.

    Yellow marker depends a bit on whether your background is of a uniform or near-uniform hue. Just make a selection of the text, then start the paint tool and use the bucket tool (FloodFill) over the text background. Modify the tolerance parameter if necessary.

    A dedicated marker function would be nice though.

    see attached example

      looking for a marker function too I found this thread.

      as we can see in the preview pic,
      the solution of jazzman is not so pretty good
      (color dropouts in letters like e a A o O q Q R p P d D g b B)

      but I found a total simple and nearly* perfekt solution here:

      in a few words (if link will be lost)

      1. just mark the part (e.g. text) you want to be colored
      with the standard mouse rectangle (press and hold left mouse button)

      2. open menu: Picture -> change color (shift G)

      3. now you have not only the yellow backround option, but

      3a-c. 3 background colors (marker)

      3d-f. 3 text colors

      3a. set the Red slider to -255: cyan/aqua background marker
      3d. " to +255 -> red text color

      3b. set the Green slider to -255: magenta backround marker
      3e. " +255 -> green/ lime text color

      3c. set the Blue slider to -255: yellow background marker
      3f. " +255 -> blue text color

      so in summary:
      your text marker is just 2-3 clicks away, but

      * a dircet button in the tools list would be a nice addon feature

        Yes, much easier for yellow, cyan, or magenta, or for black out.

        For other colours, the colour replacer tool can be used in IrfanPaint.

          I had not spotted this post before. I have been using the method in the pcworld link for years for highlighting.
          Also possible after selecting the words and pressing Shift+G are:

          Set Brightness (or Gamma) to 0 for Black out. Move R,G,B sliders to right to add primary colors if desired.
          Set Brightness to max for White out. Move R.G,B sliders to left to add complementary colors.

          Close that dialog but leave the selection box and use the Replace color tool from the Image menu to change a Black out or White out to the page color. (IrfanPaint not required).

          [New] Use Remove/Insert Strip from the Edit menu to remove a whole line or a whole paragraph.
