    Solved Square Thumbnails

Is there a way to create square thumbnails, preferably in batch, out of original images of different orientations and sizes, and with customizable background color?

Similar to what is seen in different online stores for products that are sometimes in vertical or horizontal layout but all fit in the same square thumb and the empty space if filled by a background color, usually white.

    Thanks for any input!

Save as PNG using the Windows background colour for transparency. White may work best, unless your images contain white.
Set the batch resize options to fixed size and do not preserve the aspect ratio. You can optionally crop the images before resizing if they all have borders or space around the object.

That is helpful, unfortunately saving the thumbnails as files only saves them as JPG, so no transparency, but I guess a white background is fine in most scenarios.

          Many thanks folks!

I finally found the best solution is to select all thumbs, start batch with selected files, batch conversion, set the output format and then click on advanced options for using RESIZE and setting large side to a given size and also setting CANVAS SIZE at same dimension as the RESIZE setting + a background color in there.

In my case white color is just fine.
