Solved Paint dialogue only shows greyscale, not colour

For many years I have used the paint dialogue to add a colour ellipse or box around a section of a jpg image to highlight that area. However today the paint box only gives me grey options to choose from, not colour.

I've searched the forum and believe this may relate to the way the image was saved, perhaps as grayscale only, but can't find a way to reinstate the coloured line option in paint.

What do I need to do to revert to a paint dialogue with colour option?

As an aside, I am running the lates 64 bit version 4.56 but the drop-down box in the Profile section doesn't include this option (the latest option is 4.51). I assume this is updated by an administrator from time to time.

From the image menu, Increase colour depth to 16.7 million.
