Time to stay logged in - too short

This forum is set to keep a person logged in just long enough to find something interesting to reply to, and by the time the reply is written the time is up - unless the little remember box was not forgot. I'm a bit irked about that, because I do forget to check the "remember me" when I log in. Is there a reason for the short time, or is it just a neglected default?

Yeah, I find this somewhat annoying too. I'm not 100 % sure, but I think trying "remember me" didn't make a difference.
While I'm composing a reply, which, as you say takes some time, especially with the method of writing I use, I have tried
to program myself to refresh the forum-page once in a while.
I come on other Vbulletin forums where I experience the same problem. The PHP ones have different options for this.
But also a default is scripted, so it can be changed.

      Hi guys,

yeah - the "session timeout" is 900 seconds (15 minutes).

What timeout should i choose ?

I would prefer "Forever", but I won't ask for that, because not everybody has the decency to log out before leaving.
So I would already be quite content with 30 minutes.

That looks good to me - gives a person time to think Of course logging out is not really such a big deal, IMHO. The "user is online" feature has its own timer, and can be set to however many seconds of inactivity admin prefers. I am permanently logged in at a couple of Boards, one of them a V-Bulletin (and one is my own, SMF). I just make sure that when I clean my cookies I leave the right ones. That doesn't work here.

I'm not permanently online, and my set isn't permanently on, so I have to follow other procedures.
I didn't know about this "user is online" feature, and it sheds another light on the issue.
Because I suppose some activity within those 15 mins, will prolong this, so it's really about the limit of inactivity.

I am not permanently online either. To be a little clearer, I keep my logged-in cookies from forums that I visit frequently. When I return, I am recognized, the forum reads my cookies as soon as my browser requests a page. Logging out makes no difference, a person disappears from the web and is "forgotten" within a few minutes whether they log out or their computer crashes, connection dies, a power line breaks... What matters is the cookie But the cookies from this forum crumble and go stale, they are no good the next day. LOL They are only good for seeing what is new and what isn't.

I know of some people who would be in big trouble if they ever logged off from their favorite hangout or cleaned up their cookies. They have lost their passwords and depend on that long memory. I don't recommend it!

I realize that is it not so much the logging out while I am still busy with something. No big deal, even if I want to post a reply, I get the dialog to log in again, click, and I'm back in the reply dialog.
But the annoying thing is, that I've lost the indicators on the site of new things, I still didn't read so far.

Huh ? Something has changed ? Until now I still have to re-log in all the time.
Because I often spend too much time searching in my data for the proper answer for a thread, or do some testing.

I save them too, until closing Firefox.

And then the Fox eats all the cookies?
I use K-meleon as my main browser, and use other means to clean up because - well, I have my reasons. I sift the cookie file with TextHarvest to get rid of the unwanted ones and keep the handy log-ins. I delete the cache later too, because sometimes I want to fish in it for something. Most of the time it only takes a few extra mouse-clicks, less time than logging in to five or six forums. Also if I close the window and then change my mind...LOL
