    FLV file won't play

I can't play a FLV file which I downloaded from a website, either directly
from the website of from the saved version.

I've read most of the posts regarding FLV including

My Irfanview is Version 4.00 with plugins updated 24 Nov 2008
The Extensions menu does not show FLV; all extensions are checked
    and checked for all users.

I have WIN XP SP3 and IE7 and Firefox 3.
My WIN Explorer shows Flash.dll and Flash4.dll both shown as updated
    24 Nov 2008.

The Irfanview website plugins page says
FLASH - (version 2.0.0.5): allows IrfanView to read Flash/Shockwave/FLV
format but I don't see any mention of FLV in my Irfanview application.

My Add/Remove programs shows two Flash applications:-
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX downloaded via IE7
Adobe Flash Player 10 plugin downloaded via Firefox
    both updated recently.

So why doesn't a flv file play?

It does play now that I've updated Irfanview from 4.0 to 4.2.

I didn't realise until I filled in my profile that 4.0 was out of date.

All OK now, but even so, I'm surprised that version 4.0 with the plugins didn't play the flv file.

It's possible that the updated plugins are incompatible with 4.00. Flash.dll came in version 1.0.0.10 for 4.00, so the newer 2.0.0.5 may only be useful with 4.10 and 4.20.

I found a bug in this plugin. The problem is that the plugin cannot play files with special characters in name or even in path to the file. By special characters I mean symbols in Czech language or Russian and probably other slavic languages too...
