Problems with viewing photos in color

Please help me with this problem. I can't work it out. It used to work fine but something must have been changed. When I crop and save the photo it's in color, but when I open it on the desktop or upload it comes out black and white.

Is there a problem how I saved it or something else?

In the "Save (as)" dialogue, you probably have "Save as grayscale" (or similar) checked. This setting remains in force until you uncheck it.

I am pretty sure I don't have grayscale checked

but can you tell me where I should be looking to double check that please?
