Did you try to insert this format manually in Properties » Extensions » Other? Or else Properties » Extensions » Load custom file types? I don't use The Gimp, so I can't test this myself...
Than Irfan Skiljan has to pretty well look into this, according to the meaning of IV: viewing and converting graphics. That is to say: bitmaps. And I remember The Gimp may be a graphics producing program, I think the xcf format is a layer-based format. To my knowledge IV can only read the layers of Photoshop and if The Gimp handles his layers at a different level, you should export your work to another format to be able to view/edit your files in other programs anyway.
