  1. #1

    Question ghostscript plugin?

I am trying to view a EPS file and it tells me I need a ghostscript plugin.
What is it and where do get one?

    See the description on wikipedia:
"Ghostscript is a suite of software based on an interpreter for Adobe Systems' PostScript and Portable Document Format (PDF) page description languages."

See also the thread "creating a .pdf page doesn't not work" with my answer:

To write the PDF format with IrfanView you need the installed ImPDF plugin!
That means, you need the postscript plugin from the IrfanView plugin site and Ghostscript to read the EPS format! You can download the postscript plugin from the IrfanView plugin site and here (for instance) the version 9.00 of GPL Ghostscript! (I'm using since a longer time the older, but reliably, stable 32Bit version of GPL Ghostscript V8.64.)

In order to decide, which Ghostscript variant you wants to use, see also the thread "Ghostscript plug-in" with my answers:

That means: Now it's possible with AFPL Ghostscript and GPL Ghostscript to read these formats!

    short answer:
    • Because something has changed between the last AFPL and the current GPL version!

    detailed answer:
    • Ghostscript orients itself at the commercial original Adobe Acrobat!
    • And since the year 2006 (AFPL Ghostscript 8.54) there are some changings!
    • Also the pdf format has its own version history!
Now the pdf version 1.7 is the most current version!
    • It's very probable that some characteristics of this pdf version are not supported by
      AFPL Ghostscript!

    see:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Acrobat
"Adobe Supplement to ISO 32000, BaseVersion 1.7, ExtensionLevel 3" (PDF format, size=1.3MB)
(This document provide specification for PDF as implemented in Acrobat 9.0.)

    @binar
I hope these informations are a help to show you the differences between AFPL and GPL Ghostscript and
to understand why there is now a recommendation to use GPL Ghostscript!
    best regards

Sorry if I sound slow but I downloaded the latest "ghostpcl-9.50-win64" and have extracted it in its own directory but I think there is more to it to install it as a plugin for irfanview.

You can use the 64-bit version of Ghostscript (GS) only with IrfanView64; fir IrfanView32 you'll need GS32.
After installation/extraction of GS you need to set the path to the GS-folder In Irfanview: Settings > PlugIns > section OtherPlugIns > button Postscript Options.

I tried setting a path but the result was a blank image when trying to view .eps files. The default option says ghostscript is not installed and I get an error message saying the same if I try to view an eps image.

With Ghostscript (GS) actually installed, IrfanView can read the location from the registry. If you have GS only extracted to some directory, you have to manually set the "custom" path of gsdll64.dll in the Ghostscript Plugin Options. For a 64-bit version of IrfanView.
IrfanView 4.53 (64-bit as the default image viewer, 32-bit for comparison)

Laptop: Windows 10, i3 CPU, 8 GB RAM, no dedicated GPU
