Confirmed The VTF plugin no longer seems to function!

    VTF= Valve Texture File.

It's uses often for sprays (user submitted images one can paste on walls in the game) in Valve games such as Counter Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2.

However, every VTF file I've tried opening (several dozen) do not render at all, and I get "Decode Error!" I have tried it on ver 4.27 and 4.28.

The DLL is version 3.99 according to Irfanview's site.

I've included a sample vtf file for testing.

The same problem, "Decode Error!", on my laptop. But the same IrfanView on the desktop opens the VTF.

P.S. I found the solution. Just install it.

What's this for a kind of a solution?

I think, IrfanView must be able to open the vtf format without an external software!
And nowhere on IrfanView homepage I can see a link to a microsoft software!
How did it work in former versions?
From where do you have got this information?

Just now I wanted to answer to this thread:
      I'm a little bit confused!
Shall I contact the program author? (I think: Yes!)

      regards

I've got an answer from Irfan!

... The VTF Plugin is third party software from an external plugin author, who has no contact with him anymore! That's why Irfan can't change anything. (In most cases the plugin does work, but sometimes incorrectly! ...)
In my opinion therefore the program author of IrfanView should also think about the end of the support of such exotic formats!

But maybe there exist some other plugin developers, who can create alternative plugin(s) ...

Hopefully, it'd be nice to open VTF files for my sprays.

There is an old request on this forum to the person who had written a VTF plugin for Photoshop, to write one for Irfanview too. Perhaps that was the source of the IV plugin and you can find out something there.
