Reported V4.28: Windows 7 64 bit random Irfanview crash

Happens randomly, but always after several operations like adjusting colors, rescaling, inserting text box, etc. Have not had it crash in just using app as a viewer (moving around a folder with pictures) - as soon as do an operation, chances are good it will die.

I can post any other information desired. I have official plugins pack installed too. Have tried running off a network drive, portable apps, and installed on drive C: - all crash in similar manner. If it helps, can save dump information (sample below) from now on.

        Hi,

sorry, but I don't think I could help you. You should contact Irfan directly, because this is a user to user forum and he doesn't read frequently.

        Regards, Nils.

I too am suddenly seeing random crashes with IrfanView 4.28 under Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on an HP Intel dual core.

It has never previously happened, but it suddenly started about a week or so ago, so could be related to a Windows update, and it has happenend about 4 or 5 times. Typically I am composing an email in Thunderbird, and I want to do a screen dump of another window. I PrtScrn, open IV, paste the screen dump into IV, crop, resies and/or reduce colours to 256, Ctrl/v paste the image into the Thunderbird email. When I then attempt to close IV it hangs, the IV screen then goes greyed out, and I have great difficulty in closing it - the X at top right won't close it, nor will r-click > Close window on the task bar icon. I have to start TaskManager and end the IV process.

I have installed IV 4.30 to se if it fixes it.

This is similar to my problems - happens in 4.30 too (same offset so likely identical bug). You and I have operations in common: crop & resize. May be a bug in those routines. I can probably capture a dump if that helps anyone. It's rather reproducible, unfortunately. If there were any alternative apps, I would have give up by now (it's that frequent/frustrating).

See my post with a slew of crash reports: http://en.irfanview-forum.de/vb/show...6256#post36256

I also had problems trying to save a cropped image in Windows 7 64bit home premium. Downloaded riot.dll plug-in, but received error messages of varying kinds. Unaccountably, now, today, I tried again and it worked! Perhaps as we write, the technical wizzes in the background are sorting out the hitches. Hooray! Still no idea why it wasn't working and why it is now working but I'm grateful for all the help.

Just wanted to check back with the forum to say that:
                  * I've been upgrading versions and putting up with the crashes (which happen frequently) - below is a recent one.
                  * got my friends to use irfanview on Windows 7 and they've been also complaining of crashes when adding text to images (via F12)
                  * If it helps, we have to use Windows 7 enterprise and also Microsoft Defender (which may be messing up the stack?)

Q: Is there a debug version that writes a log-file or that has more debugging information available? I can not easily reproduce fault but it has to do with rescaling more than 1 image in a row, adding text, rotating to horizontal, etc.
I should add that I do not know how to/have never been able to "contact Irfan directly".

I have learned to save the file before every of above steps. For tedious steps, I QUIT & restart and that buys me more steps before it wants to crash again.

                  Here's one of today's crashes:

                  Problem signature:

I like irfanview so much I keep using it even though it crashes "occasionally".

HOWEVER, I tried the latest 64-bit version (4.51) and it crashes for me EVERY TIME I use any of the F12 functions! Add a line = crash, add text = crash, etc etc.

I have a new, fancy laptop, but I'm still on Windows 7 enterprise.

                    Going back to 32-bit.
