    Irfanview Desktop Wallpaper Slideshow

The Microsoft Windows 7 comes with a built-in "Desktop Wallpaper Slideshow" on his theme manager for you to view photos from last weekend from his family on the beach, then as users of Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP could accomplish the same task so easy and practical?

How to create a "Windows Desktop Wallpaper Slideshow" with Irfanview?

    Prerequisites:

Download and install the program Irfanview from site http://www.irfanview.com/, the file is very small (less than 1.5 megabyte) and your download will take less than 1 minute.

    Configuration:

    1. Make sure your Wallpapers folder (eg "C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers") contains only images and photos files (bmp, gif, png, jpg, etc.), it can contain as many sub-folders you want to organize them by theme for example.

1.1 Open the text editor of Windows on menu "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad". Copy and paste the text below for the contents of the file and save it with the name "slideshow.bat" on root folder of drive "C:\". In the menu "Start -> Run..." type the following command "C:\slideshow.bat" and click on button [OK].

    @echo off
    For /F "Tokens=2 Delims=:" %%I In ('Chcp ') Do Set /A _CurCP=%%I
    chcp 1252
    del /aS /f /s "C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\desktop.in i"
    del /aS /f /s "C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Thumbs.db"
    dir "usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\*.*" /a-D /b /s > C:\slideshow.txt
    chcp %_CurCP%
    echo File C:\slideshow.txt generated successfully.
    pause

Note 1: The folder "C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers" is used here only as example, so you should replace it in the command lines for the folder you choose on your hard disk.

Note 2: The file "C:\slideshow.txt" generated text will have a structure like the following:

    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Hawaii\Beach_Sh ade,_Moloaa,_Kauai.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Hawaii\Island_S eascape,_Kauai.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Hawaii\Surfer_a t_Twilight.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Hawaii\Tropical _Lagoon.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Hawaii\Waikiki, _Oahu.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Places\aurora boreal.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Places\Red moon desert.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Places\Stonehen ge.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\bambú.jp g
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\grama e orvalho.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\palmeira .jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\pedras redondas.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\plantaçã o de arroz.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Nature\veio na madeira.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Ocean\Azul.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Ocean\cardume.j pg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\Ocean\Follow.jp g
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\SurferMag.com\a ichnerandyirons1280.jpg
    C:\usr\fernandosantucci\Wallpapers\SurferMag.com\a lley-1280.jpg

Note 3: Whenever you make changes to your Wallpapers folder by adding new photos and deleting others, simply run the command "C:\slideshow.bat" again.

1.2 As an alternative to procedure 1.1, you can use the graphical interface itself Irfanview to generate the file "C:\slideshow.txt" with the list of images via the menu "File -> Slideshow..." It is very intuitive and interactive, so do not describe here. It's only important to note that, by convention, the file is in the root folder of drive "C:\", because it will be used in step 3.

    2. Open the Task Manager of Windows on menu "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks" and double click the first option: "Add Scheduled Task". In the Scheduled Task Wizard, click on button [Next], then click on button [Browse] and select the file "C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe". Enter the name of the task as "Irfanview Desktop Wallpaper Slideshow" and select "Run this task: Daily at 00:00 hours". On the next screen click on button [Next]. On the next screen enter your username, password, type your password again and click on button [Next]. On the next screen click on button [Finish]. The task was created, but we still need to configure it.

    3. Also in the Tasks Manager of Windows, open the Scheduled Task "Irfanview Desktop Wallpaper Slideshow". In the tab "Task" complements the field "Run" with the following command line parameters:

    "c:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe" /filelist=C:\slideshow.txt /wall=2 /random /Silent /killmesoftly

3.1 The option "Activated" will be often used by you when you want to activate or deactivate temporarily the task of slideshow.

3.2 In the tab "Schedule" click on button [Advanced...] that will open the detail screen of the schedule we want. Uncheck the option "End Date". Check the option "Repeat task" and set "Every 15 minutes until the duration of 24 hours and 0 minutes". Check the option "If the task is running, stop it at this time" and click on button [OK]. In the previous screen, click on button [OK].

Note 4: You can change the repetition time of the task (the exchange of slides) in accordance with your desire. Example: Every 15, 30, 45 minutes or even hourly.

Note 5: It's important to remember that the wallpaper in Microsoft Windows operating system only allows you to view files in Bitmap format (.bmp), so the Irfanview made automatical and transparent to you the task of converting the image file from current format to format (.bmp) in background to suit the conditions imposed by Microsoft Windows. In extreme cases, depending on the size of the image file (over 10 megabytes), for a short period of time this processing can fully occupy the processor of your computer. You'll hardly notice the effect of delay (lag) on time of response if the computer simultaneously using an application that consumes too much processor time as editors and converters for video streaming or online multiplayer games via Internet. But don't worry because there are no side effects that put your computer in risk or disturb, for example, your web browsing.

    Enjoy!
