i_view32.exe doesn't close when I close IrfanView window

    Hi,
when I close IrfanView window, the i_view32.exe process doesn't stop and remains in memory. When I open multiple instances of IrfanView, each one doesn't stop and that really clutters my virtual memory. What could be the cause of that?
    I'm using IrfanView 4.27, Windows XP SP3.
    I've found a similar topic here: http://en.irfanview-forum.de/vb/show...ory-after-exit
unfortunately unchecking that option doesn't solve my problem.
Closing IrfanView window with Alt+F4, Esc or that little X at the upper right corner of the window doesn't help.
*.ini file (I was unable to attach it to the post because of some error):

I just created an account just to post exactly same bug. Windows XP En SP3, IrfanView 4.28. Tried also also last 'fixed' version as it was fixing issues with closing, but apparently it's not related (anough).

This is not normal behavior so you need to tell us exactly what you are doing.
How are you opening Irfanview? By double clicking on the exe file, or a shortcut to it or an image file associated with Irfanview? By dragging and dropping an image file onto the program or shortcut icon? From a batch or script file or from the Command Prompt?
What do you see on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen while you are runnning? Are you opening anything apart from the Viewer window, e.g. Thumbnails, Slideshow, Batch conversion, Search?
Are any other program icons visible on the taskbar?
When you attempt to close the program is anything left on screen? Is anything left on the taskbar?
How do you know that the program is still running? If you are using Task manager is it an application or a process that you see and what name is shown?

The "fix" for Irfanview 4.28 that you spoke about Gucek was so that the program would close when Alt+F4 was pressed. All other methods of closing the program should work OK in the original release.

nothing is shown on screen, taskbar or in programs list in TaskMan - they are listed only in process list.

OK, so no clues to be found there.
I was unable to reproduce this problem when previous posts were made so cannot help unless you can give specific instances of when it does and does not occur.

            Hi,

I also cannot see this problem on several computers. Maybe you should contact Irfan, maybe he has a special version which will give some debug informations.

            Regards, Nils.

              I think I've found it.

The problem occurs only when I have external monitor enabled in my laptop. If I have a single monitor configuration (Right Mouse Button on Desktop: Properties: Settings under Win XP), then IrfanView closes normally.

I'm using some very old nVidia drivers: 7.7.7.9 (those were the only ones available for my old laptop).
I also use ZoneScreen, so you can play with that also.

              Regards.

I have just joined this forum - with some considerable difficulty - because i_view32.exe is strangling my computer.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a 2.4GHz machine with 2.5Gb RAM.

I opened IrfanView Help from Start / All Programs.
Both Help and the program itself opened.
The Windows taskbar showed a single tab listing both programs in one Group.

I searched the Help for a particular topic, but did not use the program itself.

Then clicked on the Taskbar to Close Group.

Since then i_view32.exe has taken between 45% and 95% of CPU continuously.
Even typing this message is slow and painful.

Thank you to this forum for showing me that's it's a known bug in IrfanView, even if an unusual one.

I'm sorry I've nothing to contribute in return, except to confirm that you aren't imagining it.

I'm going to End the process now.

Yup, Task Manager shows other programs coming back to life.

Something to remember for next time I use Irfanview.

                Thanks, David

Irfanview help is a .chm file that should be opened by the Microsoft HTML help executable HH.EXE. Opening it from Start / All programs should not call i_view32.exe at all.
I should check what program you have associated with the .chm file type.
