    How can I easily open files with unknown extensions?

    Please be more specific. IrfanView will try to rename images with the correct extension if it detects an image header.

    If you have a folder of files with unknown extensions you may find it useful to use the Files > Search files... feature.
    Put *.* in the Filename Pattern box and browse to your folder in the Search In box.
    Start Search will then list all the files in the folder.

    Click on Show in Thumbnails and thumbnails will be displayed for all your files. Those which Irfanview can open will be shown as normal thumbnails. Those that it cannot open are shown as a circle with diagonal bar. You can then double click on those that are normal thumbnails one at a time and choose whether or not you want Irfanview to rename them before displaying.
    Alternatively, if you want to step through and accept the rename each time, use the Space bar to step and the Enter key to accept and display. Best to set up a small main window to display in so that you can still see where you are in the Thumbnails.
