    Photoshop .psd files error message

Having used Irfanview for many years, I now find that an increasing number of Photoshop composite images (.psd) will not display and instead there is an error message in 43 lasnguages that 'Image not saved as a composite image. When then 'Open with external editor' is used, no problem in Photoshop. Nor in Windows on XP Pro.

I've tried reinstalling both Irfanview (all file associations are on) and Photoshop CS4, but no difference. What settings should I use, please?

Just to explain a bit the problem.

A Photoshop .psd file contains the layers of an image during editing.
It may contain a composite image which is a merge of all layers respecting masks, blend mode and more.
This composite image is what the user sees on the screen.

If the composite image is not part of the psd then IrfanView ist not able to generate this image from the layers. Only Photoshop is able to do this task in the correct way.

To store the composite image in the psd file you have to set Photoshop psd writer to the 'maximum compatibility mode'.
