I am setting a lot of IPTC data in my images. For mass settings, for for tags that IrfanView doesn't allow me to edit I use exiftool. However for small tasks, fixing a couple of values, IrfanView is easier.
One of the tags I'm using is the ReferenceNumber (exiftool name), tag 140. But I have found that if I use IrfanView to change any of the IBPC tags that it does allow me to edit that the value in ReferenceNumber is deleted. Note that IrfanView will accept a value of sort $D$F $X $I50 in the "Show Text" box for full screen display, so it does know that such a tag exists. I posted this as a bug report more than a month ago, but nothing has been done to make IrfanView safe for IPTC tags.
Does anyone have a possible workaround, or a suggestion for some program that I can use to work on these tags without destroying data? Unfortunately, the exiftool GUI will only display, not allow editing on tag 140. At least it does display it.
