Out of memory (not!)

I'm trying to create a panorama, by merging ten icon files together into one image. The icon files are about 2KB (20KB total) each. When I select "create image", Irfanview says "Out of memory". I have 1397MB of free memory at the time that IV reports this. Help??

IrfanView version 4.10
My system:
P4 3Ghz, 2GB total RAM
Nvidia 7600GS video card
80GB free disk space

Later note:
If I convert the icons to bmps, this issue does not occur, so it's a .ico issue...

Same error when trying to make a panorama with ICO files.
You found a good workaround (using BMP).

This doesn't surprise me. I noticed before a kind of odd behaviour when IV with ICO files. File associations :

The left GIF dialog shows a normal IV-icon from its set, while the ICO dialog comes up with a dummy icon.
