Reported v4.23: IrfanView hangs by selecting the "File->Open" dialog!

I had installed the previous version of IrfanView and since it hung at the "File-Open" dialog I installed IrfanView 4.23!
But then there comes the same effect!

When I click the "File->Open" dialog IrfanView hangs forever! (not responding)
    Hourglass forever!

    What's happen?
    (My OS is Windows XP!)

Try to use a cleaning tool like ClearProg, CCleaner or another one!

Such problems are not caused by IrfanView!

Whilst I agree that problems such as this are probably not caused by IrfanView, I think the program might handle them better.
We get lots of reports like this where IrfanView hangs up in some way when trying to open a new file in Thumbnails or the main viewer. Either the busy cursor just remains on or the system reports that "IrfanView is not responding". Is there not a case for a timeout that displays "File not found" and restores normal operation in such cases? I know it may be annoying but surely better than having to stop a non-responding program with Task manager and then restarting it.

Could be your antivirus' real-time scanning slowing you down. Might try turning it off to see, and upgrade to a better one if it is the problem.

          IrfanView hangs my machine

I've been a huge fan for years, but 4.23 on Vista hangs my machine at various points. I have dump the power to get out. Ugly. Any ideas?
