    V4.25: bluescreen with Windows 7, cdd.dll / win32k.sys

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Irfanview 4.25

Hardware: Intel C2D E8200, Mainboard Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670. RAM has been tested with several tools and is error-free.

    Reproducing the crash:

Opening a folder containing a few thousand images via "Browse with Irfanview". Thumbnail options are "Resample", 250x250. Selecting images with "Shift" + cursor down key, pressing DEL to delete about 15-20 images at a time (deleting directly, no confirmation). After a few minutes, it BSODs shortly after pressing DEL. Both times i caught "cdd.dll" in the corner of the screen before Windows 7 rebooted the PC. This actually brought me here, because this thread seems to be about a very similar or the same issue.

Here is a screenshot of Bluescreenview:

Funny enough, there the cdd.dll isn't mentioned anymore. But i saw it mentioned in the actual Bluescreen when it happened.

The first Bluescreen was really surprising, so i tried to reproduce it by doing the same thing in Irfanview, and it worked, i got it exactly after pressing DEL again. The screen corrupted for a second (lots of weird horizontal lines) and then the Bluescreen appeared. I don't want to reproduce it many more times as it's not good for my nerves.

P.S. My machine is proven to be stable otherwise. Several hours of Memtest86+, Windows Memtest, Prime95, LinX, OCCT, basically everything...

And not a single bluescreen in almost a year of Vista x64 operation before. And Irfanview worked fine there too.

edit: This also seems to be related.

      Thanks for the reply.

It seems that we have three factors in common here:

      - Windows 7 x64
      - ATI graphics card
      - Irfanview 4.25 in thumbnail mode

Therefore it should be quite easy to reproduce this crash. But what can be done about it?

In every case Win 7 noticed this "sudden death"
        -> Img-1

My actual work-around is to deactive the "Desktopgestaltung" in the IV-shortcut.
        -> Img-2
        Attached Files

Maybe there is a good logging possibility with this???

because the blue-screen is reproductive every time..

Thanks for the link. I might need that some time
            Its: Belongs to "It"
It's: Shortened form of "It is"
            ---------------------
            Lose: Fail to keep
            Loose: Not tight

Yes. In english this is called "Disable desktop composition" and what it does is disable Aero (the DirectX window effects first introduced in Vista).

My theory is that IrfanView, possibly together with the ATI graphics driver, tries to do something funny in Windows 7, crashing it. It should normally be very hard to crash Windows 7. But it's so easily reproducable that we should really inform Irfan about it.

Yes, it happens every time and yes without Aero it works!

Inform the developer -> IMHO this should be also the function of this board, or am i wrong?

Yes, but only when it says "Forwarded:", Irfan gets to read it.

Irfan is the guy who writes IrfanView. When a thread says "Forwarded:", the bug has been forwarded to him. Otherwise he apparently won't know about it.

And who changes a thread to "forwarded" ?

I guess a moderator, when they decide that Irfan needs to read about it.

Hello. I am not using IrfanView but i basically have the same problem. Using win 7 x32/x64 (tried both) with aero on, playing CS 1.6, when i quit it goes in BSOD with cdd.dll or win32k.sys (mostly cdd.dll). Disabling desktop composition solves the problem. I don't like this but i haven't found any other solution. (I disable it by right clicking on application and set it on compatibility tab).

I mention that i am using Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT.

CiTay and me using ATI graphics, so in my opinion this seems to be a problem with the application itself in common with Aero...

                              Anyway it should be fixed.
