This post is offered in case (a) a Linux version of IrfanView is ever under development and (b) the error hints at a problem that may affect Windows users as well.
Attempting to play a .wav in IrfanView 4.27, after installing IrfanView via Wine in Ubuntu 10.04, produces this error message:
Error: Windows can't play this file!
Windows error text: Invalid MCI device ID. Use the ID returned when opening the MCI device..
You can try to install additional video/audio codecs from this site:
or try the DirectShow option in 'Properties->Video'
