When browsing a folder containing pictures with both landscape and portrait orientation (as usual) the size of the landscape oriented pictures will be much larger than that of the pictures with portrait orientation (assuming that someone uses his or her monitor in landscape orientation). E.g. with a screen resolution of 1024x768 the landscape pictures with the normal aspect ratio of 3 to 4 will fill in the whole screen while the portrait oriented pictures will be displayed in a resolution of 576x768.
With "fit long side to short side of desktop" both landscape and portrait pictures would be displayed with the same size of 576x768 pixels providing more consistent picture browsing experience -- just like in the case of printed pictures.
This feature would equally be useful in full screen and in window-based mode.
