Requested Save without the EXIF rotation

Most digital cameras store all photo images in landscape format and increasing numbers now also have an orientation tag in their EXIF data that shows how they must be rotated in order to view them the same way up as they were taken.
If, like me, you choose to leave the images in that form until you have decided exactly what you want to do with them, you can set the "Auto-rotate on EXIF data" option in IrfanView so that they are always viewed right way up. Fine so far.
If you do want to edit them in any way though, perhaps just to adjust color balance or brightness or make a small crop, you find that you cannot now save them again in the original unrotated state.

    Two changes are requested,
    1) It should be much easier to turn EXIF auto-rotation on or off for the currently displayed image. Diving deep into the options menus every time is not really viable.
    2) When switching to off, the edited image should be immediately rotated back to its original orientation and the EXIF tag restored. It can then be re-saved correctly.

I have one suggestion for an implementation, but do post if you have a better one.
My idea is to add a new check box on the Information dialog, next to the EXIF button (when displayed) and labelled "Image Rotated". If the currently displayed image has been rotated by the EXIF data then this box will be checked. Clicking on the check box will close the Dialog and change the auto-rotate setting just for that image; the setting in the options menu remains unchanged. Using the Information dialog might also allow for a 2 key shortcut (I,R) to be used.

I've hardly experience with this EXIF rotation, but this seems a very reasonable request.
And a 2 key shortcut is evidently an improvement compared to 'diving in the options'.

Nice story, but IV also talks about ‘if available’. My .NEF (Nikon) and .DNG (digital negative) files are all Orientation-tagged, but there's no rotation at all in IV. So I'm waiting for this ‘bug’ to disappear before I dare to think of any Exif button. Besides: when I convert NEF and DNG to JPG (with IrfanView), all my Exif-info has gone. So for that job I use that other viewer (from FastStone).

There are a lot of things wrong with how EXIF data is handled Sjef, but is anything likely to happen without us asking for it?

I guess you're right. One question can sometimes bring more clearness than ten answers...
