    Requested Enhance Colors improvements

    Hi people!

I´d like to suggest some improvements of the "Enhance Colors" function.

The previews are too small & can not be zoomed & the window can´t be resized/maximized.

Correcting colors by dragging RGB sliders is difficult & time consuming, so an easier way to do this would be nice. Auto-corrections don´t work well in most cases.

I use Photoshop 7 for color corrections & a very useful & quick way to do this is the Levels/Curves "Set white/grey/black point" function.

Just choose one of the "white/grey/black point" color-pickers & then click on a corresponding spot on an image. Done!

Also the option to let the user change the RGB-values for the color-pickers is useful. For example, sometimes you don´t want black to be pure black (RGB 0,0,0) ...

    An example:
Many digital photos have a blue color cast. If you have a photo of a guy in a white t-shirt, but the shirt looks blueish, select the "Set white point" button & click on the t-shirt. Tadaa! It´s now white & the whole photo should have accurate colors.

After that, the final adjustments can be done with RGB & gamma-sliders. Very quick & easy.

Find me on: Zivity: http://www.zivity.com/users/DaeEnterprises My Blog: http://grndby.tumblr.com/ I have a background in event and street photography but have now diversified. My interests run the gamut, from editorial and fashion, to artistic and experimental. I always have shoot ideas I am eager to try but am also flexible to attempt something new. At the moment, I am primarily interested in TF work, though I am also open to other arrangements. I have an ongoing interest in working with models needing sets for Zivity. I am big on communication: pre-, during-, and post-shoot. I find most unpleasant situations can be resolved with better communication, and many awful ones can be avoided with excellent communication. Best way to initially contact me is via email: dae@daeenterprises.net I look forward to hearing from you. Testimonials & Comments: Katlyn Lacoste http://www.modelmayhem.com/1227596: “Shooting with Daeman was absolutely awesome! He is one of the most professional photographers in the community you will find. Full of ideas, very respectable, and a pleasure to work with. If you get the chance to shoot with Dae do not miss it! You have have a fantastic experience! If you have any further questions I will be more than happy to answer. Dae gets 5 thumbs up.”] Anastia Rose http://www.modelmayhem.com/1999296: “My very first shoot I ever did Daeman was one of six photographers that I worked with. Some of them were nice, some were creepy. But Daeman was different. I instantly felt comfortable shooting with him. He gave good directions and had good ideas on poses. A few months later I called him and asked if he could help me do a few more shoots and he took time out of his busy schedule to help me. I had a blast shooting with him. He is very professional and I have never felt uncomfortable working with him. He is a great photographer.” Lilly http://www.modelmayhem.com/1640131: “I thoroughly enjoyed my shoot with Daeman. We had a misunderstanding at first through email but it was all worked out when we spoke via telephone, Dae is huge on communication and that's something that I appreciate dearly as a model. The photoshoot itself was amazing, I was very comfortable around him, and he had so many ideas that I was able to pick and choose. He brought lots of fun clothes, and when it was time for the nude portion of our shoot he was really professional and respectful, even brought me a robe to ensure my comfort, I would love to work with him again!” Caylee Shea http://www.modelmayhem.com/1800487: “Daeman was a true pleasure to work with. He is very proffesional and always followed through on concepts and ideas planned on. I recommend every beginning model to do a shoot with Daeman.” Credits: Models:(Recently worked with are at top of list. Multiple times are starred.) Hmm, There has been threads here about improvements of the Enhance Color dialog before.
First, it has to be said again, IrfanView is not a big painter like the P'shops. And I don't expect it to be.
Of course I can agree with:
The previews are too small & can not be zoomed & the window can´t be resized/maximized.
but for most jobs of color-correction this sneak preview is quite sufficient imo.
Correcting colors by dragging RGB sliders is difficult & time consuming
Come on, it's not that bad. Dragging a slider is only difficult if one demands some precise value in one action.
But dragging is a rough method. So for precision it's better to put the focus on the slider and use the L-R arrows.
Or, if the desired value already has been chosen, to edit this directly in the value box.
Auto-corrections don´t work well in most cases.
If you mean Shift+U, it depends of the material. Sometimes the result is ok, but I agree, it's a bit of a lucky shot.
But this is another function of IV with no connection to the 'Enhance Colors' dialog.
As a matter of fact, it would be a nice improvement if the resulting values of the Shift+U calculations would be transferred to the Shift+G dialog.
Just choose one of the "white/grey/black point" color-pickers
IV doesn't have a color-picker tool, only the Paint-plugin has.
But, also a color-picker has no functional connections to the Enhance Color dialog.

The 'set white point' issue has also been discussed in a thread about decreasing the number of colors.
(If a picture is 8Bpp or less, there is a palette, which can be edited or replaced by a file.)

OT. I still can't cope with the desire to want things being 'quick and easy', while at the same time the demand of keeping quality.
Because I think it's a contradiction. If one wants quality, it needs an investment of extra work.
Finetuning, testing, using three tool to get the final result.

Well, it was just an idea & this is the Feature Requests forum so...

Maybe a more advanced color correction tool is better as a plugin. I still think it´s a very quick & simple way to fix colors, but I don´t now how difficult it would be to add a Levels tool to Irfanview.

That´s why I like the PS Level tools "Set white/grey/black point" thing. It combines 'quick and easy' & quality.

Anyway, this is a function/plugin I´d use a lot, together with the RIOT Image optimizer. And then I could uninstall the bloated Photoshop for good.

Yep, the RIOT is a nice one too.
Whether you can get rid of the bloated one depends on the personal demands of things I guess.
I still keep PSP in the background in case I have to do something with layers..

Well, I´ll probably keep Photoshop no matter what, but I´m using Irfanview far more than PS.

When it comes to my IV requests, they still remains, even if I´m the only guy who wants them :-)

Edit: Here is an image of an improved "Enhance colors" or plugin. The RGB sliders has been replaced with a "Level-tool"
