I have posted this feature request with another called "Undo after Open or Save". IMHO this request is useful on its own, but even more so if the two requests are taken together.
If the "Open after Save" option is selected, then after an image is Saved (or saved As) to a file, the saved file is automatically opened and displayed in place of the previous image.
The first advantage is that you immediately see what you have just saved. If you have inadvertently selected a save option that you did not want (such as the notorious Save as grayscale JPG) then you see it immediately and can avoid doing it again.
A second advantage comes when the original image was derived from a scan or was pasted from clipboard. Some features, such as Open in External Editor, cannot be used even after the image has been saved. With this new option selected, these features would be usable as soon as the image is saved.
I see two shortcomings if implemented alone. First the user cannot, after finding he has made a mistake during Save, undo that error by recovering the original image. Second, after a Save As, he will usually be in a different folder and cannot immediately continue browsing in the original one. Hence my proposing it as an Option.
Both these shortcomings are addressed by "Undo after Open or Save".
