I think border's paradise's suggestion is pretty useful. For instance, sometimes you have similar looking GIF animations that are actually very different when you see them animated.
For all of you arguing that GIF animations are usually very small: be that as it may, the merit here is not with having a small, quick-view version of a larger image. It's being able to preview a stock of animated images in a single go without having to open and compare them.
