One thing that would lift Irfanview from the catagory of "viewer" to that of a bonifide editor/art program (similar to say Gimp) is the ability to handle layers. Is that likely to happen anytime soon?

You obviously didn't do a search about this subject on the forum..
Otherwise you would have seen this issue coming back an back again.
The policy to stay primary as a "Viewer" as opposed to a "Painter", with the 'layer' options.
Adding layers to graphic editing is quite a complicated extra demand on memory programming.
It's a matter of priorities between enhancing the tool, or expanding it.
