    Requested Shuffle Contents in Slideshows

    hi,

for the slideshow feature, having images play on a random basis is not practical for the user, since, as I'm sure you know, during one viewing session of the slideshow you can see some images more than once and some images not at all...

You should use SHUFFLE CONTENTS instead, so: instead of doing the random thingie you shuffle the contents once (if user has selected this option) when the slideshow starts running, that's it...
(this is an option in Windows slideshow in screen-saver, you can shuffle contents, it works very well...)
you could make "shuffle" an option in "sort files" function in slideshow dialog...)

    juuuuuuuuust a sugestion........

    thank you..

I know that it still says Random in the dialog but I think you will find that the current issue of Slideshow is in fact just a shuffle. Every image is shown once and the same sequence repeats each time it loops.

As of 4.25, it appears that the sequence does not repeat each time it loops. Now it is reshuffled on each loop, but there appears to be no way to disable that. This probably is the result of the great new command line switch /reloadonloop which checks for changes to the input on each loop. Although, you don't need to use the switch for the reshuffle to occur, so no way to disable from the command line either.

This will probably cause a slight complication for your request, Mij.

Yes, thanks for the reminder Skippybox. I suppose I shall have to re-investigate what happens now. If the folder is reloaded and its contents have changed, does the file list in the dialog get updated?

The file list in the dialog is a composed list, so it would not get updated if something changed. Reason being that its source could be any number of locations, not just one folder. I don't think the dialog uses this because the input source is not well-defined like in the command line, nor is there an option in the dialog for it.

As far as I can tell, all that happens is that the list is reshuffled upon loops, no changes are made to the actual list when using the GUI. Test it and tell me what you find. I have not fully investigated it.

I find the random-shuffle feature of the slide show to be one of IrfanView's best features, just as it is!!! Especially so now that Irfan has finally also added the memory option to the random-shuffle feature, so that you can now back up to previously displayed images, in the order they were just displayed, even though they're being displayed in random order. (I use it for folders containing thousands of images at a time, and so don't mind if some images get repeated before I'm all the way through -- what I previously hated was not being able to stop or back up when I encountered a particular image I wanted to focus on.)

Well, you still can go back in 4.25, just not after the very end image is passed. Once it reshuffles, obviously all your history is lost, including the previous image.
