Automatic Explorer Thumbnail Update after edit

After doing any editing to an image (in my case always cropping) the thumbnail on the explorer doesn't update (not even after pressing F5).

I've learned that's cuz the "save with original date/time" is enabled, which basically prevents Windows from refreshing thumbnails.

Is there any way to solve this w/o disabling that option? Could this "feature/request" be added in future versions? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Sorry if this is impossible or a dumb idea, but I thought about something like "after saving an image, force Windows to refresh its thumbnail (not all thumbnails in folder)".

Windows keeps track of file changes using the file date/time. If you keep the original date/time, Windows won't notice any change, so it won't generate a new thumbnail.

One option would be periodically clear your thumbnail cache.

JendaLinda I understand that, but does that mean that it'll never be possible to add a feature that allows you to do what I proposed? Or it's just that IrfanView can't force Windows to do stuff?

My fastest solution is to copy/paste the edited file, this creates a copy with the thumbnail updated and also keeping the date/time, then I delete the first file. Couldn't IrfanView perhaps do something like that automatically? Sorry if these are dumb ideas.

You can save the edited file to a different folder and then replace the original file.

          Hi team,
I can add to the discussion: Same problem with Win10 file explorer not updating the thumbnail after cropping with Irfanview 4.60. However cropping with Microsoft Photos does update the thumbnail when saving as the original file name. Photos changes date file date/time as shown in Image\properties to the current date/time with original date/time retained in EXIF info, whereas Irfanview doesn't change the date/time in Image properties. I, like irfajohn22x, do a lot of scanning and cropping and would prefer that file explorer showed the cropped thumbnail immediately to help me keep track of which files have been cropped. Saving to another folder or any other process would double the time required to process each file. I'd be happy for irfajohn22x's request to be followed up.
Many thanks for such a wonderfully capable program.
