    Straightening a Selection

    Hi,

I have taken a photo (see attachment) from which I want to select a part to create a new image. In this case the image I want to select is not positioned straight in the overall image which implies that I will loose parts of it and on the other side wil have unwanted surroundings.

    Any suggestions?

Choose menu Edit --> Show Paint Dialog (or press F12). In the paint dialog you then choose the "straighten tool" (marked with a red circle in my screen shot), then draw a straight line along any of the borders you want to be horizontal or vertical.
After that just crop as usual.

      Hi jazzman,

      Thanks for the quick reply.

I will follow instructions and expect things will work well.

For small rotations such as you need here there is a useful alternative method without using the Paint plugin.
First drag a selection rectangle around the area you want to straighten to give yourself a reference (or you can use Edit > Show fixed grid)
Then hold down Ctrl and Shift keys and use the keyboard right or left arrow keys to rotate the image in tenth of a degree steps until the area you want is aligned with the selection rectangle.
Hover the key over each side in turn until you see the 2-headed arrow cursor and drag the side to where you want it while holding down the left mouse button.
Finally use Edit > Crop selection to cut out your picture.

Unfortunately your picture is not quite a rectangle so you will not be able to frame it exactly. If you want to make it into a rectangle you can instead use the Perspective transformations 8bf filter that is now included with Irfanview. This is what I was able to get by using that.
