How to clean speckles from BW scan?

Here's my scenario:
Taking BW scans of maps, putting them in Irfanview and would like to "despeckle" the image.
Have toyed with settings on the scanner to get it as clean as i can but there's still lots of speckles.
Is there some trick i could use in Irfanview to despeckle an image?

Can you post a sample crop of one of your scans and describe what are the speckles you want to remove?

If there aren't too much speckles one can use the 'Clone' tool of IrfanPaint (F12).
One can overwrite the speckle with an area of e.g. the background.
