Can IrfanView change a 'JPEG' to a 'GIF' image

    Good evening,

I have been trying for some time to change a JPEG image (applet) to a 'GIF' image so I can use it as a desktop.

However, so far I am falling flat on my face.

Am I asking IrfanView to do something it is not capable of doing?

I am running a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home Sp#2., with IE7 and my IrfanView is v4.10.

    Thanks and regards,

Of course IrfanView can convert a 'JPEG' to a 'GIF' image.
A matter of opening the JPEG and pick GIF in the 'save as' list.

But you must be aware of the fact that a JPEG can be full-color, while the GIF format has a max of 256 colors.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "use it as a desktop".
As a pictogram on the desktop, or as background picture for the whole desktop?
In both ways the desktop environment will have its rules of which formats are acceptable to use,
so then it has little to do with IrfanView.

      Hi Sam_Zen,

What I am trying to do is put a good looking 'applet' depicting a moving stream as a picture in the center of my desktop.

I tried what you suggested but when I do it the water stops moving.

      Thanks and regards,

Okay, what you are trying to do is impossible. The motion effect is produced by a Java applet using a jpeg image as a base. The motion is not in the image, but in a small java program which is not part of the image. Animation is not possible in a jpeg. That image format can not contain that kind of information.

          Hi matera,

Thanks, now that I know that I can get some sleep.

          Have a great day!

Ah, matera is right, I should have understand while reading 'applet'.
This is a well-known Java thing to make a moving water surface.

A thing that could be done here, is use some app for video-capture of this animation, and make an animated GIF of it.

                Hi,

The 'Video-capture' sounds interesting but it is also 'way over my head' in computer expertise.

Guess I will just be content to have the still picture on my desktop and I will just imagine the water is 'flowing' ...lol

                Thanks and regards,

Imagination has one other great benefit -- it uses less computer resources, leaving more to play with

This could be realized in a local situation by creating an offline HTML-file with the water-javascript-code around the image-tag.
But I'm afraid this is a bit too technical.
And if it's meant for the desktop, I'm afraid an animated GIF is not one of the options to show.
