batch divide a file

I'm looking for a way to take a large multi page tiff file and split it into multiple tiff files each containing just 2 pages. I can either do this while scanning (twain) or after scanning. Either way would work. I could have sworn that irfanview had a way to do this but I'm struggling to find out how. Is there a way to do this or was I dreaming?

I have no other idea than extract all images and then make new TIFFs with two pages each.
