What does "total pictures" in EXIF info stand for?

Hi there,

When you view image properties in irfanview of a picture taken by digital camera, does "total pictures" at EXIF info* stand for:

total pictures taken to the flash memory card in camera (whole history, ignoring flash memory card format?)
or
total pictures taken with the camera (total pictures taken in cameras shutter history?)

Not all cameras record this. When they do it usually refers to the total number of pictures taken by that camera since new. Useful if you are buying a used model.

Yup, I'm selling used D60 forward, and I was wandering does that "total pictures" refer to the total number of pictures taken by that camera since new?
