I just downloaded this program and i was hoping it would be very evident how to compress a tif file I have but it's not and i don't want to try to figure it out. Can someone give me short course on compressing it please?

Well, you want a course, but you don't want to try to figure it out... Not quite encouraging to put any effort in this, to be honest.
Anyway, I suppose with shrink you mean getting a smaller filesize of a TIF file.
First, open any file, and choose 'save as' and TIF in the output format list.
You will get a dialog 'TIFF save options'. Study the different options. -
