directions to save logo as transparency don't work

Hi

I'm trying to save a b/w logo with a transparent background so I can eventually place it over (in front of) another layer. Currently it has the standard white square background.

I've tried saving it as a gif and a png, and selecting the transparency option before saving. Either way, the save doesn't seem to be working. When the new window pops up and directs me to click on the background to set it, I keep getting a rectangle show up when I click........... almost like a selection box. Then when I try to copy the logo over to my working copy the white square is still there. I MUST be doing something wrong, but what???

I'd appreciate any help.

Don't know what you mean by rectangle showing up. Can you show us what is happening? Can you upload the logo file?

What are you using to paste the copy over? (IrfanView can't paste transparent)
