I too encountered this problem, however my research pointed me to it's being a problem in Windows XP Pro, probably on the system sharing the files.
In my case it was a large folder of family photos (currently >6000) that other systems (both Windows 2000 and XP) could read with no difficulty. At some as yet undetermined point these remote systems could no longer view any new images added to this folder tree.
Since these images were arranged by year, I created a new share (Photos2008) out of the 2008 folder, and users at the remote system can now view these images through the new share.
Does anyone have any idea what causes this limitation within Windows XP?
